3D Layout and Blocking ( 3D Animatic ) using Blender

Help filmmakers get an idea of what a sequence will look like before actual Film shooting.

They are used to test timings and flow and to see if the sequence gets the correct meaning across at the right pace.
3D Layout and Blocking ( 3D Animatic )are the blueprint for your project. They show you what works and what doesn't,
where objects should start and finish, and give you the basic impression of your final product.
They are the first step toward success.

We will teach students the fundamentals of staging, pacing, layout, camera and scene setup. The objective is to get the students comfortable and confident with translating pre-established storyboards into a working, coherent 3D sequence.

 

Once you’ve finished our workshop, you’ll have learned the following skills:

  • Translating storyboards and animatics into the 3D layout

  • Preparing proxy assets

  • Composing shots in 3D

  • Staging and blocking

  • Positioning or animating the camera

  • Camera finessing at animation stage (if required)

  • Maintaining visual and technical quality, style, and continuity throughout the project

  • Loading pieces and characters into the shot

  • Putting the characters in key poses to define actions and movements

What you will learn

A layout artist’s position in a 3D animation studio is really demanding and needs a comprehensive understanding of different subject areas like cinematography, lighting, blocking, acting, animation, etc. Above all, powerful imagination and creativity are among the most important qualities of a layout artist.

1. Blocking

  1. Blocking is to show a clear direction of where you intend to go with a shot

  2. Try keep to minimal controls with maximum effect

  3. Keep it simple

  4. Put the simple Blocks for the most important part of the scene

 

2. Steps to Animating a scene

  1. Staging and Posing your character

  2. Time out key poses in timeline

  3. Breakdown poses between key poses

  4. Polish timing by smoothing out the curves in the graph editor

  1. Mac or PC capable of Running Blender Version 3.0 or above

  2. Animators requires you to have a working knowledge of, and experience with, Blender
