GIMP: A multifunctional and versatile image editing tool

Updated: Aug 22, 2022

Doubtlessly, Adobe's Photoshop first comes to mind when people think of image editing software. Its rich functionality and excellent interface experience make it a must-have tool for many professional designers and creative workers. However, for non-professional users, who are instead new to retouching and graphic design, it may be a heavy burden to spend extra money on a set of software only to learn. Therefore, today I would like to share with you a free open source image editing software - GIMP.

Q: What is GIMP?

A: GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an open source and free GNU image processing software supported by Unix, Linux, Mac and Windows operating systems. Released under the GPL (GNU General Public License), the GIMP project began in 1995 and its first release, GIMP 0.54, was released in January 1996.

Q: What features does GIMP have?

A: GIMP is an all-round image processing software that is comparable to Photoshop and other professional image processing software in many respects. For example, GIMP can be used to resize and retouch photos, design web images, create book covers or any other graphics design project. Thus, it can meet the needs of both amateur and professional users.

Q: Why should I learn to use GIMP?

A: There are many Photoshop-based image editing tutorials on the web. Since GIMP has many similar features to Photoshop (e.g. brush tools, layer functions, color adjustment), by browsing through existing Photoshop tutorials, beginners can get to grips with some of the basic operations of GIMP and the main principles of image processing, setting up a good foundation for learning image editing.

If you would like to learn more about GIMP, design concepts and the application of different image editing tools, you may want to take a look at the "DECT Career Course Guide - Image Processing With Design Practice, GIMP & INKSCAPE Introductory Workshop" jointly organized by Krystal Institute and Neng Yan College. During the workshop, our instructors will share professional techniques, practical tips and spiritual insights with the support of practical examples throughout the entire design process to enhance your knowledge of image processing and graphics design.
